Understanding Dachshund Coat Types

Dachshunds come in three distinct coat varieties, each with its own grooming requirements and unique personality traits. Whether you prefer the sleek look or the fluffy cuddle buddy, there is a coat type for you.

Smooth (Shorthaired) Dachshunds

The most common and recognizable coat type. They require the least amount of grooming—just a quick wipe down with a hound glove or damp cloth to keep their coat shiny. They tend to be the most attached to their primary owner.

Longhaired Dachshunds

Known for their elegant, flowing coats. They require regular brushing (at least 2-3 times a week) to prevent mats and tangles, especially behind the ears and under the legs. They are generally considered the sweetest and most docile of the three varieties.

Wirehaired Dachshunds

The clowns of the breed! They have a rough, wiry outer coat and a softer undercoat, along with adorable bushy eyebrows and a beard. They require regular brushing and "stripping" (plucking dead hairs) a few times a year. They tend to have the most terrier-like personality, being energetic and playful.
