Dachshunds make excellent travel companions due to their small size, but their unique physical needs require some extra planning when hitting the road or taking to the skies.
Car Travel Safety
Never let your Dachshund roam freely in the car. In the event of a sudden stop, their backs are extremely vulnerable. Use a crash-tested dog car seat or a secured crate to keep them safe.
Flying in the Cabin
Most Dachshunds are small enough to fly in the cabin with you, stowed under the seat in an airline-approved carrier. Book early, as airlines have a limit on the number of pets allowed per flight, and acclimate your dog to the carrier well in advance.
Packing the Essentials
Bring more food and medication than you think you'll need. Don't forget their favorite blanket, a portable water bowl, and copies of their vaccination records. Since Dachshunds get cold easily, pack a sweater if you are traveling to a cooler climate.
