Dealing with Separation Anxiety in Dachshunds

Dachshunds form very strong bonds with their owners, which is wonderful, but it can sometimes lead to separation anxiety when you leave them alone. Left unaddressed, this can result in destructive behavior and excessive barking.

Signs of Anxiety

Common signs include pacing, whining, or barking as you prepare to leave, destructiveness (especially around doors and windows), and accidents in the house even if they are potty trained.

Desensitization

Practice leaving the house for very short periods (even just a few seconds at first) and returning before the dog gets anxious. Gradually increase the time you are gone. Do not make a big fuss when you leave or when you return; keep it calm and low-key.

Create a Positive Environment

Give them a special treat, like a Kong stuffed with frozen peanut butter, only when you leave. Leave a piece of clothing that smells like you in their crate or bed. Consider leaving the TV or radio on for background noise.
